The Central Coast Council (the Council) is proposing a new By-law to regulate caravans and camping across the Central Coast municipal area in aims to ensure sustainable and safe use for visitors and residents.
Following feedback from locals and tourists, the Council have heard the need for clearer rules and management of camping areas. To address these concerns, the Council are proposing a new By-law which will provide a framework for the responsible use of camping in areas owned or under the Council’s supervision. These new rules include restrictions on the location and duration of camping, prohibition of open fires except for outdoor solid-fuel alternatives, requirements for permits and the proper disposal of rubbish. These rules are designed to provide an opportunity to welcome visitors more sustainably by reducing the potential negative effects on our local environment caused by uncontrolled camping.
“Visitors making trips in RVs in Australia have increased significantly over the last ten years. In the Central Coast we have a unique opportunity to tap into this growth, whilst ensuring that our natural reserves and foreshore areas are sustainably protected for the enjoyment of all visitors and residents” – Deputy Mayor, Cr John Beswick.
Those who do not comply with the new regulations may be subject to fines and are therefore encouraged to familiarise themselves with the rules to avoid any potential penalties.
Particular attention has also been given to how the new regulations will impact those faced with homelessness. As always, the Council are dedicated to supporting those in need of compassion, and though lengths of stay will be restricted to 3 nights, those experiencing homelessness will be able to access longer periods of camping with permission from the CEO or their delegate.
The Central Coast Council is committed to creating sustainable and enjoyable spaces for all residents and visitors and will consider community feedback prior to making any final decision to adopt the By-law.
To find out more on the proposed By-law or to make a submission before the deadline of Friday 6 December 2024, residents are encouraged to visit https://www.centralcoast.tas.gov.au/by-laws/
