Funding Secured to Plan for Foreshore Future

Central Coast Council is thrilled to confirm a $420,000 funding commitment from the Tasmanian Government, secured as part of the 2025–26 Budget, to develop a transformational Ulverstone Waterfront Masterplan — a bold, long-term strategy to shape one of the region’s most cherished areas.

This major planning project — stretching from the Rowing Club on the River Leven through to the Ulverstone Surf Life Saving Club — will allow us to reimagine our riverbanks, beaches, parklands and public assets in a way that enhances recreation and tourism, strengthens climate resilience, and celebrates everything that makes Central Coast special.

Mayor Cheryl Fuller welcomed the announcement, saying:

Many of the world’s great destinations are located close to the water, either by a river or the sea. Ulverstone is blessed to have both. This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to plan for a vibrant, connected and resilient foreshore that supports recreation, tourism, events and wellbeing, while celebrating the community spaces and clubs that already bring this area to life.”

The planning process is expected to take 12–18 months and will include significant community engagement. It will require big-picture thinking — spanning climate adaptation, access and inclusion, tourism, public art, and more. Council’s in-house team will lead the work, supported by external technical experts funded through this investment.

The Masterplan will identify clear, shovel-ready priorities for future funding opportunities and guide long-term investment in critical infrastructure, including improved connections between the foreshore and CBD.

Importantly, the planning process will consider the needs of the many community groups who call the foreshore home and plan for future upgrades to community infrastructure. This includes facilities used by rowing and sailing clubs, surf lifesaving, and other recreational and environmental groups. These organisations are the heart of the precinct, and supporting their work is central to Council’s vision for the waterfront.

At its core, this project is about building a sustainable future — one that enhances our natural assets, strengthens wellbeing, and leaves a legacy for generations to come.
