Central Coast Council has announced the recipients of its 2026 Australia Day Awards. The awards recognise locals who have made an outstanding contribution to the community through leadership, service, volunteering and community spirit.
Mayor Cheryl Fuller congratulated this year’s award recipients and thanked them for the positive impact they continue to have across the Central Coast.
“Our Australia Day Awards recognise the people and groups who make a real difference through their time, care, leadership and commitment to others,” Mayor Fuller said..

2026 Central Coast Council Australia Day Award recipients are:
Citizen of the Year: Mrs Jeanne Koetsier
Mrs Jeanne Koestier is recognised for her long-standing service to the Penguin community, including her involvement with the Uniting Church of Penguin and the Central Coast Voice for Health. She has supported local events and initiatives that strengthen community connection and belonging, including helping coordinate Dutch Fest as part of Penguin’s 150-year celebrations.
Young Citizen of the Year: Bree How
Bree How is recognised for her leadership and service through Scouting. She began her Scouting journey with the Motton Preston Scout Group and achieved the Scout Medallion before she turned 15. Bree returned to Scouting in 2024 as a Rover Scout with the Leven Rovers and was later elected Rover Crew Leader. She has actively supported fundraising, events and mentoring, and continues to step up across multiple local Scout groups.
Champion of Sports Award: Michael Wilson
Michael Wilson is a long-standing member of the Ulverstone Rowing Club and is recognised for his outstanding achievements in rowing and his contribution as a coach, mentor and club ambassador. He has competed successfully at state and national level, including winning multiple gold medals at the National Masters Regatta, and continues to inspire others through his commitment to growing the sport and supporting fellow rowers.
Community Event of the Year: Penguin 150
Penguin 150 is recognised for bringing the community together to celebrate 150 years of Penguin and the 50th birthday of the Big Penguin. The celebration included a range of events highlighting local history, culture and community pride, including the Great Penguin Waddle, a cemetery walk, Dutch Fest and the Penguin Street Party.
Community Group of the Year: Due South
Due South is recognised for its impact supporting veterans and first responders through wellbeing programs, mental health support, social connection and inclusive community events. The group provides a welcoming space where people can connect, access support, and strengthen their wellbeing.
Mayor Fuller said the awards reflect the strong community spirit found across the Central Coast.
“These recipients represent the best of our community. They show up for others, strengthen local connections, and help make the Central Coast a great place to live,” Mayor Fuller said.
