PROJECT OUTLINE
Remediation works will shortly commence to repair the significant landslip and storm damage to Gunns Plains Road and Lowana Road which occurred during the October 2022 adverse weather event. The McPhersons Road bridge is also being repaired at this time for logistical reasons.
These $2.8m works have been funded through the Tasmanian Relief and Recovery Arrangements as well as budgeted Central Coast Council capital expenditure.
The design of the engineering solutions has taken some time due to the complex nature of the sites and work must be undertaken during the warmer months. The innovative engineering solutions being employed on these projects will future proof our rural roads, providing safer access for our community.
TIMELINE
The tenders for the works were awarded at the Council meeting on 23 September 2024. The Council will work with the contractors to establish the start date for works. We anticipate this to be mid-October.
ROAD ACCESS CHANGES
Road closures at the site of the works will be necessary due to the challenging nature of the works to be undertaken, and the narrow roadways and steep embankments.
It is important to note that access to private properties and businesses will NOT be blocked throughout the duration of the works, however detours will be in place.
Access to Gunns Plains Road between Preston Road and Raymond Road will be open for residents only to access their properties. There will be no access through the work site for ANY traffic.
All through-traffic will be detoured via Preston Road/Raymond Road. Lowana Road will also be closed to through traffic. Detours will all be well signposted. The bridge replacement on McPhersons Road is projected to have minimal impact as a bypass bridge will be in place whilst the new bridge is built. Access to Gunns Plains from Penguin will remain unchanged.
The map below highlights work sites and detours. The map can be downloaded here.
Whilst we acknowledge the necessary detours will be inconvenient for some road users, the alternate routes will add a reasonably short increase to trip times (estimated 6-9 mins depending on route).
The Council is committed to minimising disruptions whilst ensuring these important works are undertaken safely.
