Deputations & Petitions

Deputations

Deputations provide an opportunity for community members and stakeholders to bring matters to the attention of our Council.  Deputation requests are to be submitted in writing and presented to the Chief Executive Officer before the ordinary Council meeting via email [email protected].

As part of our corporate governance requirements, we must operate in accordance with the conditions set out in the Deputations Policy.  This Policy outlines the requirements of Councillors, Council staff and the community who are proposing a deputation.

Petitions

Petitions are an important way for residents and groups to make their concerns known and can sometimes even ignite change.  However, there are a few rules and guidelines our community should abide by to ensure we can accept their petition.

Petitions are governed in the general terms set out in the Local Government Act 1993.  When submitting a petition to us, it is important to ensure it adheres to the specific conditions for governing petitions.  Petitions can’t be tabled at a meeting if they do not comply with section 57 of the Act.

Here is an example of a Petition Cover Page and Petition Template to assist you with lodging a petition that complies with section 57.

Local Government Act 1993

Petitions to councils are governed in general terms by sections 57, 58 and 339B of the Local Government Act 1993.

There are also more specific provisions governing petitions seeking public meetings (sections 59, 60 and 60A), requesting elector polls (sections 60B, 60C, 60D and 60E) and for ratepayers affected by the intention of a council to make a separate rate (section 103).
