About the project
The Central Coast Council conducts regular inspections of its bridges and jetties to ensure public safety. Due to the aging condition of the Penguin Jetty, monthly inspections have been carried out to closely monitor its structural integrity.
Following an inspection in early 2025, it was confirmed that the jetty’s deterioration had worsened, increasing the risk to public safety. As a precautionary measure, Council made the decision to close the jetty to the public effective 28 February 2025.
Jetty Reopened
Council is pleased to announce the reopening of the Penguin Jetty following important temporary repairs. These works were undertaken to ensure the jetty remains safe and accessible for public use.
The works included:
- Installing new FRP flooring on the deck to remove trip hazards from the old sleepers.
- Adding new posts on the ramp side to improve access and provide better contact points for boats.
- Installing new support posts at the end of the jetty to extend the life of the structure.
The repairs will help maintain the jetty’s condition until the broader Johnsons Beach Precinct Plan is implemented, supporting long-term improvements for the area.
Johnsons Beach Precinct Plan
In 2025-26, Council will develop a Johnsons Beach Precinct Plan to guide the long-term future of the jetty, boat ramp, and surrounding areas. Community consultation will be a key part of this process to ensure the plan reflects local priorities and aspirations.
This approach will allow Council to consider the jetty’s role within the broader Penguin township and deliver a long-term solution that meets community needs. It will also integrate with coastal pathways and address other important factors such as parking and accessibility.

February 2025 Update
Short-Term Plans
Council has developed a solution for temporary repairs to extend the jetty’s lifespan by at least another five years.
The design for repairs is currently being finalised, and Council will undertake the works as soon as possible.
Construction is expected to take several months.
Long-Term Plans
In 2025-26, Council will develop a Johnsons Beach Precinct Plan to determine the long-term future of the jetty, boat ramp, and surrounding areas. This plan will involve community consultation to ensure it reflects local needs.
This approach will allow the Council to consider the jetty’s role within the broader Penguin township and ensure a long-term solution that not only meets the community’s needs but also integrates with coastal pathways and addresses other factors, such as parking.
Impact on Residents
We acknowledge that this closure will significantly impact those who use the jetty and attached boat ramp. However, public safety is our top priority, and Council is taking all necessary actions to reopen the jetty as soon as possible.
During the closure, the jetty will be inaccessible to residents, but the boat ramp will remain operational. Council recognises that access to the boat ramp may be more challenging during this time. There may also be minor disruptions to the parking area and coastal pathway near Penguin Jetty foreshore.
