Checking In Matters: 3 Lessons from R U OK? Day

A simple conversation can change a life. That’s the message at the heart of R U OK? Day, a nationwide movement that began more than 15 years ago when founder Gavin Larkin wanted to honour his father and encourage more meaningful conversations about mental health.

It has grown into a reminder for all of us: don’t wait for a crisis, or for one day in September. Make asking “Are you OK?” part of everyday life.

Council marked R U OK? Day with a number of activities across our workplaces – from coffees at the Ulverstone Childcare Centre, to a breakfast BBQ at the Depot, and an afternoon tea at the Administration Centre. Guest speaker Greg Smith, from Men Care Too and an R U OK? Ambassador, shared powerful insights about how small actions can make a big difference.

1. Trust your gut

If something feels different about a colleague, friend or family member, don’t ignore it. As Greg put it, “we all know when someone’s a bit off – that’s when it’s time to ask how they’re going.”

2. Confidence starts conversations

Starting the conversation can feel daunting, but it doesn’t have to be. R U OK? has simple resources for workplaces, schools, sporting clubs and rural communities. They can help you know what to say next – but what matters most is having the confidence to start.

3. Listening makes the biggest impact

You don’t need to fix everything. Greg reminded us that often the most powerful thing you can do is listen with patience and without judgement. Loneliness, grief, financial stress or relationship breakdowns can weigh heavily, and listening may be the first step to easing that burden.

So next time you notice a change in someone, don’t wait for R U OK? Day. Trust your gut, ask the question, and take the time to listen. Because checking in really does matter.
