Know Your Rural Roads this National Road Safety Week

National Road Safety Week 2026 runs from Sunday 17 May to Sunday 24 May, and this year Council is encouraging local drivers to Know Your Rural Roads.

Rural roads are part of everyday life on the Central Coast. They connect our towns, farms, schools, workplaces, sporting grounds and homes. But they can also change quickly, with narrow lanes, winding corners, uneven edges, wildlife, changing weather, farm vehicles, cyclists, motorcyclists and visitors who may not know the road as well as locals do.

That is why knowing your rural roads matters.

As part of National Road Safety Week, Council is inviting the community to complete a short Know Your Rural Roads quiz and test their knowledge of rural road safety.

Everyone who completes the quiz can go in the draw to win a 12V Air Compressor thanks to Repco Ulverstone.

Did you know?

Each year, approximately 1,300 people are killed on Australian roads and another 40,000 people are seriously injured.

In Tasmania, 43 people died and 282 people were seriously injured on our roads in 2025.

According to the Road Safety Advisory Council, rural roads make up 80 per cent of Tasmania’s road network, and two thirds of Tasmania’s fatal and serious crashes occur on rural roads.

Tasmania’s rural roads are often narrow and winding, and conditions can change quickly. Rain, wet roads, icy conditions, darkness and unfamiliar roads can all increase risk.

Know your rural roads

This National Road Safety Week, take a moment to think about the rural roads you use most often.

  • Do you know where the sharp corners are?
  • Where wildlife often crosses?
  • Where the road narrows or the surface changes?
  • Where cyclists, motorcyclists, farm vehicles or heavy vehicles may be sharing the road?

Simple choices can make a big difference:

  • Slow down and drive to the conditions.
  • Watch for wildlife, especially around dawn and dusk.
  • Expect the unexpected around bends and crests.
  • Share the road and give other road users space.
  • Avoid distractions and keep your full attention on the road.
  • Never drive tired, impaired or above the speed limit.
  • Wear your seatbelt properly on every trip.
