Bruce Bertram Edwards, known to many in Penguin as Tommy, has been awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the General Division for long-standing service to the Penguin community through surf lifesaving and volunteer transport.
For the Penguin community, the recognition reflects decades of steady, practical service. Tommy was previously named Central Coast Citizen of the Year in 2014, and his OAM acknowledges more than 70 years of volunteer involvement, particularly through surf lifesaving and community transport.
Raised in Penguin from infancy, Tommy’s connection to the town has shaped a lifetime of involvement in organisations that rely on experience, commitment and people who are prepared to keep turning up.
Seventy years of surf lifesaving
Tommy joined the Penguin Surf Life Saving Club in 1955 and remains involved today. Over seven decades, he has contributed as a patrolling member, office bearer and trainer, and continues as organiser of the Tom’s Terriers training squad.
Across that time, he has trained and patrolled alongside generations of volunteers, many of whom have gone on to long term service themselves. His contribution has extended beyond the local club through Surf Life Saving Tasmania, including service as Tasmanian Patrol Officer and ongoing roles as an official and examiner.
He has been recognised as a Life Member at both club and state level, and in 2013 the Penguin Surf Life Saving Club training room was named in his honour. While he no longer patrols at the pace he once did, Tommy continues to spend time at the club and assist where needed.
Service beyond the beach
Alongside surf lifesaving, Tommy has contributed to community transport services for many years. This has included volunteering as a driver for local cancer patients travelling to Launceston for treatment, as well as ongoing service as a Community Transport Driver since 2014, helping people access appointments and essential services.
Following the passing of his partner Jan in 2025, Tommy has continued to stay actively involved in the organisations and networks he has supported for decades. He is also part of a local “old fellows” group that meets weekly at The Penguin Bakery, maintaining familiar routines and long-standing friendships.
A well-earned recognition
The Medal of the Order of Australia recognises Australians who demonstrate sustained service and commitment to their communities. In Penguin, Tommy’s contribution is reflected in decades of involvement through surf lifesaving, community transport and continued participation in local community life.
