Winter has well and truly arrived on the Central Coast, but the colder months are no reason to hibernate. From warming up with something delicious to lending a helping hand, here are five ways to make winter on the Coast a little warmer.
Warm up with something local
There’s nothing quite like stepping out of the cold and into a local café, bakery or eatery.
Grab a coffee, settle in for lunch or find something to really turn up the heat. Mayor Cheryl Fuller recently did just that at Penguin Bakery, taking on the Flaming Penguin Pie as part of our latest Mayor on the Move.
However you choose to warm up, winter is a great excuse to support the local businesses that help keep our towns buzzing all year round.
Lend a helping hand
Winter can be a challenging time for some members of our community, particularly those without a safe place to sleep.
This winter, the Combined Churches of Ulverstone are working together to provide the Ulverstone Winter Shelter, offering warm, safe overnight accommodation for people experiencing homelessness.
Whether you can volunteer your time or help in another way, supporting the Winter Shelter is a practical way to lend a hand to people doing it tough this winter.
Brush up on your fire safety
Heaters, electric blankets and other appliances get plenty of use during winter, so now is a good time to check a few simple things around the home.
Keep clothing and other flammable materials at least two metres from heaters. Switch electric blankets off when you get into bed and roll them rather than folding them, which can damage the wiring. Use power boards with overload protection, avoid piggybacking plugs and make sure your smoke alarms are working.
