Further water testing of the Leven River at Gunns Plains has indicated the section of river between the southern end of Lowana Road and the Wing’s Wildlife Park camping area has elevated bacteria levels such that swimming may cause an adverse reaction. The most recent tests indicate bacteria levels upstream of Lowana Road and downstream of Wing’s Wildlife Park are at safe levels for swimming.

At this stage the heightened bacteria levels seem to be caused by a combination of land use activities and a recent lack of rainfall, which has caused the water level in the river to drop considerably. The Council is in contact with land owners in the area regarding how to minimise the impact of land use activities on the water quality of the river.

The Council will continue to monitor popular swimming sites in the Gunns Plains area on a weekly basis and will keep the public informed.

Anyone with questions should contact the Council during business hours either by calling (03) 6429 8900 or by visiting the Council’s Administration Centre at 19 King Edward Street, Ulverstone.
